College savings formulas

How the projection is calculated, step by step

  1. Subtract the child's current age from the college start age to get the years until college, then convert to months.
  2. Grow the current savings at the monthly return and add the future value of the monthly contributions.
  3. Grow current tuition to the first college year, then add three more years of growth for the four-year total.
  4. Subtract the four-year total from the projected balance for the gap, and divide any shortfall by the contribution annuity factor for the extra monthly amount.
